Coronavirus deaths fall for second week in a row as new strain spreads across UK

Coronavirus deaths across England and Wales have fallen for the second week in a row, according to the latest official figures.

Of the deaths registered in the week ending December 11, 2,756 mentioned Covid-19 on the certificate - or 22.4% of all deaths.

Of the 2,756 deaths involving Covid-19, 2,337 had this recorded as the underlying cause of death That marks a decrease of 79 deaths compared with Week 49, and the second weekly decrease in a row.

The figures have been compiled from provisional data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The latest round of weekly data comes after a week of chaos in the lead-up to Christmas.
