A paedophile who was one of Britain's oldest prisoners has died after contracting coronavirus behind bars - days before his 99th birthday on Christmas Day.

Christopher Stowe was sentenced to six years for abusing a girl in the 1970s. His victim said the attacks ruined her childhood, making her feel worthless and dirty.

When he was caged last April, Judge Sarah Buckingham said it was likely Stowe would die in jail. Her prediction has been proved correct after Stowe died on December 8 after testing positive for coronavirus.

Stowe was due to mark his 99th birthday on Christmas Day. Last year the wheelchair-user, from Coventry, admitted indecent assault and gross indecency.
