The penalty for breaking coronavirus lockdown could double in price with repeat offenders being fined up to £6,300 in the UK.
A total of 9,176 fines were handed out in England and Wales over the first four weeks of lockdown prompting the Government to consider heftier punishments to keep people inside.
Despite the majority of Brits being responsible and staying home to stop the spread of Covid-19, figures released last month showed police were handing out fines at an average rate of every five minutes.
The National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) said almost 400 of the penalties were issued to repeat offenders with one person being fined six times.
