The Department of Health has been notified of 3,735 new cases of Covid-19. There are 566 patients with Covid in hospitals, up 30 since yesterday.
Of those in hospital, there are 117 patients receiving treatment in intensive care units, a decrease of one from yesterday. The Green Party leader Eamon Ryan has said "we don't know" if the new Covid-19 variant omicron is present in Ireland.
Speaking on The Week In Politics, the Minister for the Environment said: "We do a lot of testing and it hasn't been picked up yet, as far as I understand." Mr Ryan said it will take two to three weeks before scientists can tell if omicron increases transmission, increase illness, or if it can it get around vaccines.
