Covid in Scotland LIVE as Boris Johnson 'set to announce extension to June 21 reopening'
Follow all the latest updates on our blog below. A delay to lockdown easing may also help break the link between infections and hospital admissions, a public health professor suggested.Professor Linda Bauld, from the University of Edinburgh, told LBC that the variant first identified in India now accounted for the majority of UK cases, but the death rate among people with this infection was low."You can see amongst people who were infected with this variant, the mortality rate was 0.7%, just 12 people," she said."We think they are all the people who had underlying health conditions and died with Covid, not from Covid necessarily."So the proportion of people in hospital now is half of what it was, if we were in the previous situation in

A top India fund turns against riskier debt after Covid woes
Covid-19 crisis on weaker borrowers is better understood. The level of stress in the economy especially for small- and medium-sized enterprises is still unclear after states locked down to curb the spread of a second virus wave from March, said Dhawal Dalal, who oversees $4.8 billion of debt assets at Edelweiss Mutual Fund. Dalal, who manages one of the best-performing debt funds over the past year, has added only AAA rated corporate notes to his portfolio since March.“As the economy showed signs of recovering after the first Covid-19 wave, we had asked investors to start considering non-AAA corporate bonds" Dalal said in an interview last week.

Rate cut on devices may not offer relief to covid patients
medical supplies could be less than expected, with a section of the industry voicing fears of a resulting tax anomaly.Producers may not be able to recover from the consumer the taxes already paid for procuring raw material and services, following the reduction of the GST rate from 12% and 18% to 5% on items such as medical oxygen, pulse oximeters, covid test kits and hand sanitizers announced on Saturday. This, industry representatives said, could put pressure on some producers to increase the base price, excluding tax.

Covid-19 linked with Alzheimer's disease-like cognitive impairment, finds study
COVID-19-associated cognitive impairment.Reports of neurological complications in COVID-19 patients and 'long haulier' patients whose symptoms persist after the infection clears are becoming more common, suggesting that SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) may have lasting effects on brain function. However, it is not yet well understood how the virus leads to neurological issues."While some studies suggest that SARS-CoV-2 infects brain cells directly, others found no evidence of the virus in the brain," says Feixiong Cheng, PhD, assistant staff in Cleveland Clinic's Genomic Medicine Institute and lead author on the study.
