Before I ever knew Kate Schroder’s name, I heard there was a woman in Cincinnati who looked like me. For a while, this was all I knew.

I didn’t know that Kate had worked for twelve years, including two in Zambia, in public health. I didn’t know that when she was 33, she’d been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and that when she was 38, she’d been declared cancer-free.

I didn’t know she was married to a man named John and had a daughter and a son.Though Cincinnati is where I was born and raised, I haven’t lived there in adulthood.

While writing , I’ve lived mostly in other Midwestern cities, including, currently, Minneapolis. But my parents and my brother P.G.
