Why we need the red colour bin
Mint report from 13 May, 120 containment zones in Bengaluru alone have generated 80 tonnes of biomedical waste since the outbreak of covid-19. Mumbai, one of the worst affected cities in the country, is exhausting its capacity to handle the additional burden of such waste—it has “only enough headroom to handle 4-5 tonnes more than its total capacity of 75 tonnes," the article noted. If people living in isolation or home quarantine use and throw away medical waste indiscriminately, or along with their dry waste, sanitation workers become more exposed to chances of contracting covid-19 as well as other diseases that may be spread through such contact.

Officials close Beijing market, lock down area after new COVID-19 outbreak
Beijing was shuttered behind police guard and the surrounding neighbourhood locked down Saturday after more than 50 people tested positive for the coronavirus in the Chinese capital. The outbreak — coming more than 50 days after the last local case in the city of 20 million people — showed how the virus can still come back as restrictions are eased. The city’s swift response reflected China’s emphasis on moving quickly to stem the spread of new cases wherever they appear, a lesson learned from fighting the outbreak earlier.“The epidemic was already almost over, and then suddenly there’s one or two more new hot spots,” said Jin Zheng, a woman in her 20s walking in central Beijing.

‘Sitting back and watching’: Why vulnerable Canadians can’t celebrate the reopening
While many Canadians are enjoying the country’s reopening — including gathering in parks, enjoying lunch on a patio and shopping inside stores — the lockdown remains strict for those who are immunocompromised. Health Canada states on their website that vulnerable people, including those with underlying medical conditions, a compromised immune system, or are elderly, are at greater risk for severe complications if they are infected with COVID-19.11 The “reopening” of the country simply doesn’t apply to immunocompromised people, said Kristy Dickinson, 43, the founder of Chronically Simply, a health-care app that helps patients with complex illnesses manage their disease and keep their paperwork in one place.

Temperature has ‘modest’ effect on SARS-CoV-2 transmission rates
Influenza cases, for example, peak during the fall and winter, commonly known as the flu season. There are various reasons for this, including biological factors related to the virus, as well as social and environmental factors. The seasonality of the flu virus has raised hopes that the same may be true for the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, and that cases of the virus may, therefore, decrease over the summer months.Indeed, laboratory data suggest that SARS-CoV-2 survives for a shorter period in higher temperatures.

COVID-19 disability benefit, even if approved, would ‘miss all kinds of people’
disabilities to help lessen the financial strain tied to the novel coronavirus pandemic. That financial aid is now in limbo, as the measure was part of a bill that failed to receive bipartisan support on Wednesday. But even if Ottawa finds a way to deliver the income support, as government officials have vowed to do, the funds will remain out of reach for a significant share of Canadians with disabilities. The money “misses all kinds of people,” said Ottawa resident Robert Morely, speaking before Parliament’s vote on Wednesday.Morely, who was diagnosed with myalgic encephalomyelitis, commonly known as chronic fatigue syndrome, is one of those people.

Females in India may have higher COVID-19 death risk than males: Study
New Delhi: While studies have shown that men are more prone to dying from COVID-19 than women globally, an analysis of case fatalities in India suggests that females may have a higher relative-risk of COVID-19 mortality in the country.Scientists, including Abhishek Kumar from the Institute of Economic Growth in New Delhi, used crowdsourced data to provide early estimates for age-sex specific COVID-19 case fatality rate (CFR) for India. The study, published in the Journal of Global Health Science, presented an age and sex specific view of mortality from the disease using the measure of CFR, which is the ratio of confirmed deaths in total confirmed cases. In the research, the scientists evaluated adjusted-CFR to capture the potential mortality
