Disability Scoop (9/1, Teproff) reports on how the advocacy group Disability Rights Florida is working to reform the “guardianship” laws of the state “by promoting a mechanism known as supported decision-making.” Under Florida law, residents under guardianship cannot legally vote, make large purchases, or make travel plans outside the state.
Supporting decision-making “allows adults with disabilities a ‘less restrictive alternative’ while ensuring that they have oversight and help in making important decisions.” An attorney with the group, Viviana Bonilla Lopez, is attempting to use this new mechanism to help a Florida resident with autism under guardianship regain some of his rights, and receive a more active role in controlling his life.
