Coronavirus cases are climbing or showing no improvement in all but 17 areas of England, a month after infections were falling across the board, official figures show.
Public Health England statistics reveal 132 out of 149 areas of the country are worryingly failing to get a grip on Covid-19 amid fears of a second wave.
Among the worst are Sunderland, which has seen its weekly infection rate soar by seven to 59.8, and England's current virus hotspot Bolton - where the rate doubled.
The Government's 'rule of six' law imposed tighter restrictions on social gatherings on Monday in the first major countrywide clampdown since lockdown on March 23.
