There are fears that plans by the global car booking and ride sharing service Uber to seek 3,700 redundancies across its services will affect staff at its European headquarters in Limerick city.

Uber employs 500 customer service staff at its Limerick city offices which looks after its markets in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Customers can hire and use its car services through a mobile phone app. The company's business has been badly hit by the Covid-19 pandemic in countries across the world, with far fewer people using its services as a result of lockdown measures.

The company is seeking to cut staff by 14% to reduce costs. The company is headquartered in San Francisco and employs 19,000 people worldwide and over three million drivers.
