Fewer Covid-19 patients in hospital but cases rising

Latest figures show that the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 in hospitals has reduced to 249. This is five fewer than yesterday evening.

Of these 249 cases, 33 patients are in intensive care units. The Department of Health yesterday announced six further deaths associated with Covid-19.

456 new cases of the virus were also reported. It brings the total number of coronavirus-related deaths in Ireland to 1,978 while the cumulative number of cases is 67,526. "The 5-day moving average of case numbers has increased from 354 to 392," said Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan. "We have seen higher numbers in recent days than we expected based on the encouraging trends of the last three weeks.
