Tory ministers are refusing to halt the cruel Bedroom Tax during the coronavirus pandemic, it can be revealed. They confirmed there are “no plans” to suspend the cut to benefit claimants - despite its purpose being wiped out by the pandemic.
Ministers claimed changing it would not be “practical” and added: “Difficult choices have to be made about priorities”. Launched in 2013, the hated policy cuts benefits for anyone with a “spare” room.
It is supposed to drive people to get a job or downsize, freeing up bigger homes. Yet 7.5million jobs are suspended, moving house was all but banned until this week in England, and council housing departments are running on skeleton staff.
