Government to drop plan to bring back all English primary school years by July

The government is set to drop its plan to bring back all primary school year groups by July. Currently only Years R, 1 and 6 are being asked to return to primary schools in England.

The government had an "ambition" to bring back years 2, 3, 4 and 5 for a full month before the summer holidays - "if feasible".

But government sources today said that requirement has been "flexed". According to the BBC, schools will instead be given flexibility over exactly when other year groups can return.

The plan for years 2-5 had always been only if "feasible" and had always been kept "under review". A government source said that with protective measures in place, such as keeping pupils in half-sized classes of 15, "there would be practical issues" around
