An iconic 157-year-old monument on the hills above Tameside is to be restored to stop it falling into disrepair. The Grade Two listed Hartshead Pike tower, which stands on the hill of the same name in Ashton-under-Lyne, is a local landmark popular with walkers.
It was built in 1863, having been designed by local architect John Eaton, and is owned and maintained by Tameside council. The authority has now agreed to spend £61k repairing it, including restoring and reinstating the lantern at its top, which had been removed over health and safety concerns.
The masonry pointing to the spire is also in ‘poor condition’ and requires re-pointing to prevent rain from continuing to pour into the building, causing further damage.
