Italians take to the streets as lockdown misery ends – but many fear a second wave

For the first time in months, Italy’s streets and piazzas are teeming with people. The iconic St Mark’s Square in Venice was filled with Italians taking the air for the first time since Italian PM Giuseppe Conte announced the coronavirus lockdown on March 9.

Italians are expressing their delight at the chance to get something like their old life back. "I woke up at 5.30 a.m. I was so excited," said Maria Antonietta Galluzzo, a grandmother taking her 3-year-old grandson for a walk in Rome's Villa Borghese park – the first time they had seen each other in eight weeks.
