Kilmarnock rail workers face being thrown on the scrapheap after their firm announced plans to close their site. Around 100 workers at Wabtec Rail appear to have an uncertain future after bosses moved to shut the factory in the town, which has roots stretching back 175 years.Operations will continue at the company’s plant in Doncaster, South Yorkshire.The blow was dealt to stunned workers on Friday and staff are now expected to continue to work during the global coronavirus pandemic while also undergoing a 45-day consultation period.
A senior worker told the Kilmarnock Standard Wabtec bosses made the call just as they’d put in place arrangements to work with social distancing measures during the COVID-19 outbreak.
