A career guidance expert has said the option of a grading system instead of the Leaving Certificate examinations is the "best that can be done" given the circumstances.
Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Brian Mooney said it became clear from public health advice that "we were not going to be able to run exams with all the constraints and the dynamic of having 80,000 people in buildings".
The exams had been rearranged for 29 July after being postponed for June. He said whatever is announced today is "going to be a compromise" and that there are numerous issues that will need to be considered.
