USA Today (3/23, Dastagir) discusses the mental health impact of coronavirus lockdowns, and how feelings of suicide are amplified by the societal disruption and forced social isolation.
The piece says that “if someone’s suicidality stems from insecurities about self-esteem or self-worth, for example, the pandemic may not be as impactful as it would be for someone who has an anxiety disorder or suffers from catastrophic thinking.” The threat of an economic downturn and associated layoffs increase the risk of suicide.
