Millions of people in England could be put into Tier 4 this week in a desperate effort to bring a mutant Covid-19 strain under control.

With the number of new infections averaging at more than 30,000 a day, the government is facing calls to bring in tougher restrictions.

The next tier review is due on Wednesday, when it is expected the more areas will face the highest measures. In the past seven days, 248,199 people have tested positive for coronavirus - a 30 per cent week-on-week rise.
