Liverpool's Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram has hit back at the government's claims it followed the scientific advice over letting a Champion's League match go ahead in the city.

Government ministers have come under increasing fire for allowing Liverpool's match against Athletico Madrid to go ahead, despite warnings that events could be spreading the virus.

The government faced similar criticism over the decisions to let the Cheltenham Festival go ahead. Yesterday deputy chief scientific adviser Professor Dame Angela McLean said it was an "interesting hypothesis" that Liverpool hosting the football match could have spread coronavirus.
