Modi is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist volunteer organisation. He is the first prime minister outside of the Indian National Congress to win two consecutive terms with a full majority and the second to complete five years in office after Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
NEW DELHI : Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses the nation at 10 am today. In his speech, he is expected to spell out India's plan to fight coronavirus and extension of the 21-day lockdown, which was imposed on March 25 and ends today.
A majority of state governments are already in favour of lockdown extension by at least 2 weeks while some of them like Punjab, Odisha, Telangana and Tamil Nadu have already extended it on their own.
The widely-expected lockdown extension will not be the same as the existing one as Modi has signalled a shift in India's strategy to fight the coronavirus pandemic, with a renewed focus not only on ‘jaan’ (life) but also on ‘jahaan’ (livelihood).
