People asked to self isolate by the NHS Covid-19 app will now be able to use their phones to apply for £500 grants. Support payments for low-wage workers ordered to stay home due to contact with positive cases were previously only available to people reached by contact tracers.

Under new plans from NHS Test and Trace, anyone eligible for the payment can now make a claim through the app. The £500 cash payments were designed to make it easier for poorer workers who cannot afford to self-isolate for up to 14 days.

But it is still less than the £700 a 25-year-old would earn in two weeks on the minimum wage. Around 4 million people are thought to be eligible for the grant, including those on benefits and in work.
