The number of domestic abuse victims killed by their partners has more than doubled during the coronavirus lockdown, the Victims Commissioner has warned.
Dame Vera Baird told MPs on the Home Affairs Select Committee that 16 women may have been killed by their partners in the last three weeks.
On average, two women a week are killed by a current or former partner in England and Wales according to the Office of National Statistics.
She also called for supermarket workers to be trained to recognise code words from domestic abuse victims whose only opportunity to seek help could come during the weekly shop.
