Just one family has contracted 30 cases of coronavirus in Oldham as the town faces a potential lockdown. A Covid-19 spike in the Alexandra Park area of the town appears to have stemmed from one large family, who unknowingly transmitted it on to extended family members and neighbours.

Between Monday, August 3 and Sunday, August 9, the east of the town had the highest number of cases, recording 72 for the week.

And although the infection rate in Oldham has been dropping, its still has one of the three highest rates in the country, along with Northampton and Blackburn with Darwen.

The rising number of infections has been mainly attributed to household transmission, rather than people mixing in pubs, shops or restaurants, experts say.
