Piers Morgan has opened up about the moment Kate Garraway told him Derek Draper had passed away after a devastating three year battle with Covid-19.

Good Morning Britain host Kate, 56 confirmed on Friday (January 5) that her beloved husband Derek had died aged 56 due to complications after a cardiac arrest in December.

Piers, 58, has now shared the text message he received from his former co-star Kate confirming the tragic news. Writing in his column for The Sun, he penned: "I woke up in Los Angeles on Friday morning to the message from her that I’d dreaded for nearly four years. "‘Dearest Piers,’ it began, ‘Derek has passed away…’.

I was devastated, but not entirely shocked. Kate had told me things were looking very bleak when we texted each other on Christmas Day." Piers continued: "It’s hard to overstate what he and Kate went through over the past few years –the constant 24/7 physical and mental torment inflicted on them both was far worse than people realise and would have destroyed most couples. "Reading back through our hundreds of texts and reliving the traumatic roller-coaster ride of hope and despair they went on in real time, made my eyes sting with tears." Kate reportedly made a desperate 12-hour flight to the UK from Mexico with her late husband Derek, whom she shared two children with, in a bid to save his life after he suffered a cardiac arrest. The devoted television star reportedly took Derek to Mexico for specialist treatment and was told in early December that he had suffered a cardiac arrest while she was getting a connecting flight inside Mexico.
