Toronto Police Service (TPS) says members of the force who were placed on unpaid leave for failing to comply with mandatory COVID-19 vaccination requirement will return to duty late this month.In a statement emailed to Global News on Wednesday, TPS Const. Alex Li said the service “continues to ensure that our workplaces remain safe, which includes continued COVID-19 measures as appropriate.”Li said the force’s decision to rescind its COVID-19 mandatory vaccination requirement was “made in response to the current public health and occupational health context of the pandemic and the unique nature of its work and workplaces.” More than 200 Toronto police members placed on unpaid leave as vaccine mandate takes effect  The force said 99 per cent of its members are fully vaccinated and new hires are “required to be fully vaccinated.”Li said members who are currently on unpaid absence will “return to duty on June 21, 2022.”“Officers will be deployed as operationally required by the Service and civilian members will return to their original roles,” the email reads.In November 2021, the force said 205 members, 117 uniform and 88 civilian, were placed on unpaid leave for either not being vaccinated, or not disclosing their vaccination status.According to Li, as of Wednesday, 101 people will be returning to duty.

Ontario hospitals are about to enter a “difficult” week according to the province’s Chief Medical Officer of Health with the sixth wave of COVID-19 projected to send more people to hospital and intensive care.In an interview with Global News, Dr. Kieran Moore said the B.A.2 variant of the virus “continues to circulate at a high level” and could take several weeks to subside.“We drew the epidemic curve, the complete wave and anticipate June 11th to be the very end of the tail of that wave,”  Moore told Global News on Friday.

COVID-19-related deaths on Thursday as 188 new infections were added in Saskatchewan.According to the provincial government’s dashboard, the overall infection total in the province is up to 78,262. California became the first state in the nation on Thursday to surpass 2 million cases of the novel coronavirus, according to estimates from Johns Hopkins University.  Estimates from the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center show the state has recorded 2,002,494 cases of COVID-19. Nearly 24,000 people in the state have died from the virus and the state has a 6.45% testing positivity rate, according to the estimates.  The grim milestone comes as many hospitals in California are at or on the brink of capacity.
