Senior officials to meet amid Delta variant concerns

The Chief Medical Officer and Health Service Executive CEO will attend a meeting of senior Government officials amid growing concern about the rise in the number of Delta variant cases.

However, a comprehensive analysis of the the impact of the variant will not be completed until the middle of next week. A decision will be taken next Thursday on whether or not allow the reopening of indoor service in pubs and restaurants from 5 July.

But Government sources say that it is clear already the presence of the variant will continue to increase. Asked if there was greater level of concern this morning about the variant and the possibility that it might delay reopening plans for 5 July, one senior source said: "Concerns are greater.
