Staff redeployment among plans to increase boosters

Extending opening hours in vaccination centres and increasing the number of vaccinators are among the measures being considered to accelerate the roll-out of Covid-19 booster shots.

It comes amid concern about the rapid spread of the new Omicron variant, which is already estimated to make up 11% of Covid cases in Ireland.

RTÉ News understands officials met yesterday to discuss a range of issues to increase output of vaccines. These include redeploying health staff from what is deemed "non-urgent services" to the booster programme.

Already, 1.2 million booster jabs have already dispensed and the HSE is targeting 1.5m by Christmas. It is understood that more than 50% of those in most vulnerable groups have got their dose.
