No plans to change Christmas school break - Dept

The Department of Education has repeated that there are no plans to change the school break at Christmas. The Government has been insisting the schools will not be closing as a Christmas circuit breaker and the department has said schools will remain open next week.

In a statement to RTÉ's Morning Ireland, the department said there is no evidence to suggest extending school holidays has a public health rationale.

It added that there is a requirement for primary schools to do 183 school days and for post-primary schools to do 167 school days.

The department said the scheduling of the school holiday periods during the academic years is agreed between the managerial authorities of schools, the teacher unions and the department for the purposes
