Although the official term of 340 local government institutions was supposed to end on the 20th of March last year, the Minister in charge used his authority in order to extend the term by a year to end in 2023. Accordingly, the official term of 340 local government institutions ceased on Sunday (19).The State Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Janaka Wakkumbura says that thereafter, all administrative activities of these institutions will be handed over to the commissioners or secretaries. “Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka Concerned Over Use of Force Against Protesters”

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka expressed concerns over law enforcement officers who resorted to the use of tear gas, water cannons and wooden rods as a crowd control mechanism to disperse protesters over the past few days.Issuing a statement, the HRCSL noted that every citizen is entitled to the freedom of Assembly and expression and that this right has been exercised by different individuals and groups in the country. The statement further read that the Commission has initiated inquiries and investigation procedures to ascertain whether the crowd control procedures adopted by law enforcement officers are in line with constitutional provisions, international human rights obligations of Sri Lanka and basic principles of respecting human dignity. Gratz Middle School to reopen on Monday following asbestos remediation

PHILADELPHIA - A Philadelphia middle school that abruptly closed this week due to the discovery of asbestos will reopen on Monday, according to officials. A spokesperson for Mastery Charter said "minor" asbestos found at Gratz Middle School, located in the city's Nicetown section, has been "resolved." In a letter to families, Mastery Schools CEO Scott Gordon said inspectors from the School District of Philadelphia found damaged asbestos on the campus of Simon Gratz High School, which also houses Simon Gratz Preparatory Middle School. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESOfficials say the three-year reinspection of the district-owned building was in accordance with the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act. The district recommended the school be closed for the duration of the inspection, according to school officials. The Human Rights Committee on Thursday (9) concluded its consideration of the sixth periodic report of Sri Lanka on how it implements the provisions of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, with Committee Experts commending actions taken to resettle internally displaced persons, and raising issues concerning the effectiveness of constitutional reform and impunity for military officers who had allegedly committed or overseen human rights violations.A Committee Expert noted progress made in settling internally displaced persons. Prosecutors seek 15 years for ex-Dublin prison warden convicted of sex abuse

OAKLAND, Calif. - Federal prosecutors are asking a judge to stray from normal procedures and send a former Dublin prison warden to 15 years behind bars – more than 10 years more than the sentencing guidelines recommend.
