The UK's coronavirus hospital death toll has increased by nine, with all but one of the fatalities occurring in England. England reported eight new deaths on Saturday and Wales recorded one.
There were no new deaths in Scotland, which reported an additional 141 confirmed cases, and Northern Ireland. On recent Saturdays, the death toll increased by six on August 29, seven on August 22, five on August 15, and 16 on August 8.
The highest increase on a Saturday was 917 on April 11, when the UK was in the peak of its outbreak. The latest figures came as parts of northern England prepare for coronavirus restrictions to be eased next week, while other areas could be on the verge of their own local lockdown.
