PHILADELPHIA - Local school districts are turning to dogs as their newest strategy to help students and staff overcome mental and emotional struggles and stress in school.Puppies and full-grown dogs were in training with their owners at the Fallsington Elementary School in Levittown on Monday morning after the Pennsbury School District says their most recent goal is to have a therapy dog in every school in the district after recent statistics show that interacting with dogs can benefit people's mental health."We do mental health and suicide prevention programs and dogs are involved in every one of our programs," said Tricia Baker, Director of Attitudes in Reverse therapy dog training. Baker and her daughter, Katelyn, work with dogs to get them trained to provide a sense of calm and comfort in a counseling session or an emergency. The mother-daughter duo spends dozens of hours each week traveling to various schools to teach a 40-week program with dog owners and their pets."It's nice to take the knowledge we had teaching about dogs and turning it in to something even more," said Katelyn Baker. Nine administrators and teachers of the Pennsbury School District have volunteered for the 11-month intensive training course to reach their goal of having a dog assigned to each school in the district.

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Police Department is investigating a dog attack that left two people in the hospital early Thursday morning. Authorities say 25th District officers responded to the area of N 5th Street and W Venango Street just after 1 a.m. for reports of a person down. Chief Inspector Scott Small says responding officers arrived on scene and encountered a man who was being bitten by a pit bull mix. According to police, he was bleeding from various wounds to his head, neck, body, arms and legs. Small says the dog was biting on the man's arm as his family members used a bat to try to get the animal to release the man. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESAn officer discharged his weapon, shooting the dog in the side, causing it to let the man go, Small says. Police transported the man to the hospital, where he is in critical condition from his injuries, according to officials. The man's wife was also suffering from a dog bite wound to her leg, according to Small. Authorities say medics transported her to Temple University Hospital, where she is in stable condition. Small says the SPCA and Philadelphia Animal Control were called in to investigate.Police did not provide an update on the status of the dog's injuries. Police say a pit bull mix has been shot by police after it attacked its owners in Hunting Park, leaving a man in critical condition and a woman in stable condition.

PHILADELPHIA - Homicide Detectives with the Philadelphia Police Department are investigating a fatal shooting in Powelton. According to authorities, officers received calls about a shooting on the 4000 block of Lancaster Avenue on Wednesday night. When officers arrived on scene, they found a 19-year-old with a gunshot wound to the neck, police say. Officials say the man was pronounced dead at 10: 26 p.m.MORE LOCAL HEADLINESAccording to police, at least seven spent shell casings were found on scene. Chief Inspector Scott Small says police do not yet have a motive and they will be checking surveillance cameras in the area. 

PHILADELPHIA - Investigators with the Philadelphia Police Department's shooting Investigation Group are looking into a quadruple shooting that left teenagers injured in North Philadelphia on Wednesday night. According to police, the shooting happened just before 11:30 p.m. when officers responded to calls for a shooting on the 2800 block of Bonsall Street. Chief Inspector Scott Small says officers arrived on scene and found four gunshot victims who were between the ages of 15 and 18. According to Small, a 15-year-old girl was shot in the back and the leg, while a 16-year-old girl and 18-year-old female were also shot in the leg. Four teenagers were shot at a birthday party in North Philadelphia on Wednesday night, according to police.

PHILADELPHIA - A block captain who confronted catalytic converter thieves was shot by the group in East Germantown on Wednesday morning, according to police. Authorities say three suspects were in the process of stealing a catalytic converter from a van on West Pomona Street when they were confronted by the van's owner and the block captain. The block captain then followed the three suspects as they fled to Germantown Avenue, where he was then shot by one of the suspects in the chest, police say. According to police, the man was transported to Einstein Medical Center for treatment. Chief Inspector Scott Small says the man is in critical condition but expected to survive. RELATED HEADLINESA neighbor told officers that her catalytic converter was also stolen from West Pomona Street over the weekend, according to Small. Investigators say they will work to determine if this incident is related to a pattern of catalytic converter thefts in the area. Small says the incident was captured on multiple private cameras. According to authorities, the group was last seen in a grey or silver sedan that went south on Germantown Avenue.  This is a developing story.

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Police Department has launched an investigation after a woman was struck by a car and left in the street in Lawncrest. According to police, the incident occurred around 11:45 p.m. on Monday night. The woman, 31, was struck by a vehicle while crossing the 5700 block of Rising Sun Avenue, authorities say. Chief Inspector Scott Small says when police and medics arrived on scene, they found her face down and bleeding with face trauma and a broken arm. Medics rushed her to the hospital and she is expected to survive, according to officials. Witnesses told investigators that the car was moving so fast that they could not tell the model or color of the vehicle, Small says. According to police, the woman was walking to her car to get dog training pads from her parked car when she was struck. The dog training pads could be seen spread out in the street after the woman was struck and one of her sneakers remained in the road, police say. Police say the woman was crossing the street to get dog training pads when she was struck by a speeding vehicle.

PHILADELPHIA - Police are investigating a fatal stabbing in South Philadelphia, authorities say. According to officials, 1st District officers responded to the 2300 block of South 20th Street around 12:27 a.m. responding to a report of a stabbing in a private residence. When police and medics arrived on scene and entered the property, they found an unresponsive 64-year-old woman laying on her back in the hallway on the second floor, according to Chief Inspector Scott Small. Authorities say she was bleeding from a large laceration in her neck. "She was clearly stabbed several times in her neck," Small said. Medics pronounced the woman dead in the residence at 12:51 a.m., officials say. Police are investigating the fatal stabbing of a woman in South Philadelphia.
