SARASOTA, Fla. - Two Sarasota County deputies shot and killed a burglary suspect who investigators say cut another deputy with a machete after breaking into a home Thursday morning.The sheriff's office said the deputies responded to the home in the area of Richardson Way and Fruitville Road around 9:30 a.m. after the homeowner called 911.The homeowner, who was sleeping in an efficiency apartment attached to his home, told dispatchers that he woke up to find an unknown man in the apartment sharpening a machete with a baseball bat."I have an intruder that broke into my home.

(Studer Community Institute) PENSACOLA, Fla. - A Dallas man died of a bacterial infection after eating raw oysters. The Pensacola News Journal identified the man as Rodney Jackson, a 55-year-old Air Force veteran, who bought oysters from a seafood market in Florida during a recent trip.A restaurant customer in Fort Lauderdale died the same way this month. Both cases involved oysters from Louisiana.Gary Oreal, who manages the Rustic Inn, told the newspaper "Over the course of 60 years, we have served a couple billion oysters, and we never had anyone get sick like this guy did."The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says Vibrio bacteria doesn’t make an oyster look, smell, or taste any different.

LOWER MACUNGIE TWP., Pa. - A Pennsylvania boy who briefly went missing on Friday and prompted state police to issue an alert has been found. Authorities first reported the 4-year-old boy missing from Lower Macungie Township in Lehigh County around 7 p.m. The child's last known location, police said, was somewhere in the township on Friday afternoon. Hours after Pennsylvania State Police issued a Missing Endangered Person alert, authorities said the child was found safe. No information was provided about what caused the child's brief disappearance.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Authorities say a two-year undercover investigation resulted in 85 arrests, the seizure of over $12.8 million worth of drugs, and the dismantling of an international drug trafficking organization whose ringleaders operated out of Winter Haven.The Polk County Sheriff's Office said the investigation started in September 2020, when 32-year-old Demarcus Jefferson crashed his car into a Winter Haven gas station, killing a customer inside.Sheriff Grady Judd said surveillance video from the gas station showed people in masks running up to the totaled vehicle and grabbing items from the car's trunk before deputies arrived at the scene. According to the sheriff, they were taking drugs out of the trunk so deputies wouldn't find them during their crash investigation.Matt Murphy, who witnessed the 2020 gas station crash, told FOX 13 at the time that after the driver crashed through the building, an SUV showed up.

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Police Department's Homicide Unit is investigating a double shooting that left one man dead and another injured in Germantown early Friday morning. According to police, officers responded to a 911 call for a shooting on West Aspley Street just before 1:30 a.m. Responding officers found a 25-year-old man sitting inside an unattended parked Nissan Sedan, authorities say. Medics realized he had been shot and pronounced him dead at 1:47 a.m., according to officials. Investigators say they believe he was shot outside the car but was able to run to get into the car. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESAccording to police, the man did not have shoes on, but one was found inside the car and the other was found outside of the vehicle. A few minutes after officers responded, a shooting victim showed up at Temple University Hospital. The 21-year-old victim was placed in stable condition, according to authorities. Police say he was uncooperative, but investigators found clothing they believe belongs to him at the scene. Seven spent shell casings were found at the scene of the shooting, authorities say. The shooting remains under investigation.

UAMS spokeswoman Leslie Taylor said they were instead stolen from Arkansas Central Mortuary Services in Little Rock by a female mortuary employee and sold, adding that there is an open federal investigation."We are very respectful of those who donate their bodies, and we are appalled that such a thing could happen," Taylor said.A representative of the mortuary hung up on a reporter who reached out for comment Thursday.FBI Little Rock spokesman Conor Hagan said the office was aware of the Pennsylvania incident "but will not comment on ongoing investigations." Kelly Simpson was arrested in Charlotte County for interfering with the custody of a minor PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - A Port Charlotte teacher has been arrested after a missing teen was located at her residence. The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office said the teen boy was reported missing by his parents August 12. Investigators said they learned the boy may be at the home of a 31-year-old teacher, Kelly Simpson.Simpson allegedly knew the teen boy had been reported missing when she picked him up from an unknown location and "concealed him inside her home."The sheriff's office said Simpson is a teacher with Charlotte County Public Schools. She faces a charge of interfering with the custody of a minor.Charlotte County deputies said the investigation would continue and anyone with information is asked to call 941-639-2101.

(Robert Nickelsberg/Getty Images)A recent study from Yale School of Public Health found evidence of a higher risk of children developing leukemia if they lived near unconventional oil and gas (UOG) developments, also known as hydraulic fracking sites.  The peer-reviewed study published on August 17 in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives found that children who were born and lived near these fracking sites were two to three times more likely to be diagnosed with cancer between the ages of 2 and 7. Researchers observed nearly 2,500 Pennsylvania children, 405 of whom were diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common type of cancer in children, according to a news release about the study. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia, also known as ALL, is a type of cancer that causes mutations in the lymphoid immune cells. The long-term survival rates are high among children who are diagnosed with this type of cancer, however, this puts them at higher risk of developing other health problems and psychological issues, according to the study’s authors. Chemicals released from fracking sites into the atmosphere as well as pollution generated from vehicle emissions at these sites are just a few of the impacts observed in this study, according to the senior author, Nicole Deziel, associate professor of epidemiology at the Yale School of Public Health. "Studies of UOG exposure and cancer are extremely few in number.

GERMANTOWN - A family is in mourning after a woman was hit and killed by a SEPTA bus in Germantown."They said that a 71-year-old woman got hit by a SEPTA bus at Greene and Walnut Lane. We were like, ‘Wait a minute, our Aunt Eloise is 71 and usually catches the bus right there!’" exclaimed nephew Gregory Shuler.Shuler is at a complete loss after finding out, through a news report, his 71-year-old aunt, Eloise Little, was the elderly woman hit and killed by a SEPTA bus late Wednesday evening. HOLLISTER, Calif. - A San Jose fire captain is grappling with an unthinkable tragedy after all three of his children were killed in a car crash Sunday evening.Captain Steve Biakanja of San Jose Fire Station 16 lost his 14-year-old twin daughters Leigh and Lucy, and 12-year-old son Ben, in a crash on Highway 156 in Hollister.The children's mother also died in the crash.Captain Steve Biakanja pictured alongside his children, Leigh, Lucy, and Ben.  According to the California Highway Patrol, the four were traveling in a Tesla on eastbound Highway 156 when, for unknown reasons, their vehicle veered into oncoming traffic and hit a tractor-trailor.Investigators are trying to determine why the Tesla crossed into oncoming traffic.The Carmel Unified School District said that Leigh, Lucy, and Ben were all enrolled at Carmel Middle School and attended Tularcitos Elementary School before that.Superintendent Ted Knight told KION-TV, "Coming back, the second week of school to this news this morning was certainly very tragic and was hard for a lot of staff and students to hear."Knight said the deaths of Leigh, Lucy, and Ben has taken a toll on some of their classmates."Some students did need to go home. Police are searching for a car involved in a crash with a motorcyclist in New Castle County.  PHILADELPHIA - Police in New Castle County are searching for a driver accused of hitting a motorcyclist and leaving the scene. According to authorities, New Castle county police responded to Carpenter Station Road and Valley Run Drive on Saturday for a report of a vehicle collision. When officers arrived on scene, they found an injured 78-year-old motorcyclist at the intersection, police say. Investigators say the motorcyclist was traveling south on Carpenter Station Road when a cream-colored Honda CRV traveling northbound on Carpenter Station Road turned left in front of the motorcycle. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESThe motorcycle then collided with the passenger side door of the Honda and the motorcyclist was ejected, according to police. According to officials, the motorcyclist was flown to a local hospital and placed in critical condition.

PHILADELPHIA - Homicide Detectives with the Philadelphia Police Department are investigating a fatal shooting in Powelton. According to authorities, officers received calls about a shooting on the 4000 block of Lancaster Avenue on Wednesday night. When officers arrived on scene, they found a 19-year-old with a gunshot wound to the neck, police say. Officials say the man was pronounced dead at 10: 26 p.m.MORE LOCAL HEADLINESAccording to police, at least seven spent shell casings were found on scene. Chief Inspector Scott Small says police do not yet have a motive and they will be checking surveillance cameras in the area.
