Gardaí have prosecuted over 100 people for domestic violence offences in the last six weeks under Operation Faoiseamh. It brings the total number of such prosecutions to 217 since April, when the operation was set up during the Covid-19 lockdown to provide support to those living in fear of violence at home.
The suspects are being brought before the courts for suspected breaches of orders issued under the Domestic Violence Act. The Garda Protective Services Bureau also said they have recorded a 17% increase in calls for help from victims of domestic violence.
Chief Superintendent Declan Daly said he wanted to encourage anyone who feels threatened, or is living in fear, to contact the Garda and be reassured that they will respond quickly
