THE number of vehicles using the UK’s roads has hit a record 40.4million, according to auto industry figures.And the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) says many of these are now supporting the nationwide coronavirus response.
Its data shows that more than 35million cars and five million vans, trucks and buses were registered in 2019.That’s a one per cent rise on the previous year but, despite that, CO2 emissions from cars fell to their lowest level thanks to new technologies and the switch to electrification.Light commercial vehicles saw the biggest percentage growth, rising 2.7 per cent on the previous year to 4,527,724 units – and surging by 28 per cent in the last decade.
