A public health expert has said that overseas travel is one of the biggest Covid-19 threats and there needs to be an all-island approach to the issue.

Professor Gabriel Scally's comments come as a further easing of coronavirus restrictions comes into effect in Northern Ireland today.

This includes the removal of requirements for people to self-isolate after travelling to Northern Ireland from more than 50 low to medium risk countries.

The Stormont Executive signed off on the decision yesterday. The list of countries involved includes the Republic of Ireland, Italy, Spain, France and Germany.

Suspect surrenders after hours long standoff at West Philadelphia home, police say

PHILADELPHIA - Authorities gathered outside a home in West Philadelphia on Wednesday night after police said a recently evicted tenant locked himself inside with two young children.Officers from the Philadelphia Police Department were called to a home on the 5500 block of West Girard Avenue just before 8 p.m.According to police, a 36-year-old man who was recently evicted from the property changed all the locks and violated a Protection From Abuse order. Police: Gunman opens fire on officer during shootout in Germantown, no injuries reported

PHILADELPHIA - No one was injured after a gunman opened fire on a Philadelphia police officer during a shootout Wednesday afternoon in Germantown.Philadelphia Police Sergeant Eric Gripp told reporters that two plainclothes officers in an unmarked car were patrolling the 4800 block of Keyser Street around 2 p.m. when they came upon a shootout between a 23-year-old and a 20-year-old. The officer in the passenger's seat identified himself as police and ordered both men to drop their weapons when one of the men fired towards the officer, Gripp said. The officer ducked behind cover as the suspect attempted to flee down Keyser Street.
