Injuries at protests draw scrutiny to use of police weaponry
NEW YORK – In law enforcement, they’re referred to as “nonlethal” tools for dealing with demonstrations that turn unruly: rubber bullets, pepper spray, batons, flash-bangs.But the now-familiar scenes of U.S. police officers in riot gear clashing with protesters at Lafayette Park across from the White House and in other cities have police critics charging that the weaponry too often escalates tensions and hurts innocent people.“When you see riot gear, it absolutely changes the mood,” said Ron Moten, a longtime community organizer in the nation's capital who was out demonstrating this weekend.

Why has B.C. handled the pandemic better than other provinces?
coronavirus was announced in late January. Since then, the province has had around 2,800 cases of the disease. But B.C.’s infection rate, at 55 per 100,000 people, pales in comparison to Ontario, which has had 226 cases per 100,000, or Quebec’s which sits at 641.So what’s led to B.C.’s relative success so far during the pandemic? Experts say it’s likely due to a few things.Something as simple as the timing of March Break may also have had something to do with how many cases a province saw, said David Buckeridge, a professor at the McGill University School of Population and Global Health.

Shaggy-haired Brits to finally be given date they could get their hair cut
Boris Johnson, famous for his own unruly mop, is set to announce that shaggy Brits can go back to the barbers from July 4.Lockdown has left many of us with grown-out hairstyles or unsightly grey roots, and a few brave souls have even tried cutting their own hair – with sometimes disastrous results. But we’ll get a chance to put all that right from the beginning of next month. It’s also good news for 33,000 or so stylists and beauticians living in the UK, many of whom are self-employed.When we do get back into the salon, though, we will notice a few changes. That offer of a complementary tea or coffee won’t come, and there won’t be any magazines to flick through while you’re waiting.
