A business owned by Amazon has benefited from a £2million Covid crisis tax break - despite the online giant enjoying a surge in sales during the pandemic.

The retail goliath, criticised over its track record on paying corporation tax in the UK, has been one of the big winners during the lockdown.

Business has boomed as many high street shops have been forced to close. Chancellor Rishi Sunak gave many businesses a year-long holiday from paying business rates to help them survive the crisis.

The move did not benefit Amazon’s network of depots and warehouses. However, the tax break does apply to Amazon-owned upmarket supermarket chain Whole Foods Market, which specialises in organic and natural food.
