German Chancellor Angela Merkel is self isolating after coming into contact with a doctor who has tested positive for coronavirus.

In a statement, her spokesman Steffen Seibert said the chancellor had received a precautionary vaccine Friday against pneumococcal infection.

The doctor who administered it has now tested positive for COVID-19. He added the 65-year-old would undergo "regular tests" in the coming days and work from home for the time being.

It comes as Germany tightened curbs on social interaction on Sunday, including a ban on public meetings of more than two people, to slow the spread. "The great aim is to gain time in the fight against the virus," Chancellor Angela Merkel told a press briefing before she went into quarantine.
