Army on standby to end Covid-19 Dover blockade with mass testing roll out

The Army could be drafted in to deliver rapid tests for lorry drivers to unlock the border chaos after France banned travel from the UK over fears of a new Covid strain.

Troops are on standby to administer tests to hauliers in Kent within 12 hours if requested, with the disused Manston airfield in Kent under consideration as a testing site to help resume trade flows.

Amid crisis talks with France, MPs were told that around 4,000 lorries were being held up by the travel ban, which has caused gridlocks on the roads to the port of Dover.
