(GERMANY OUT) baby is sleeping, (Photo by Wodicka/ullstein bild via Getty Images) The American Academy of Pediatrics has updated its safe-sleep guidelines for infants, urging parents to make sure their baby sleeps on a flat — not inclined — surface without soft bedding and strongly advises against bedsharing. The AAP’s first update to its safe infant sleep recommendations since 2016 was just published in the bulletin "Sleep-Related Infant Deaths: Updated 2022 Recommendations for Reducing Infant Deaths in the Sleep Environment."The AAP says the risks of sleep-related infant deaths are up to 67 times higher when infants are sleeping with someone on a couch or soft armchair or cushion. Researchers note the chances of death can be 10 times higher when infants are sleeping with someone who is impaired because of fatigue or use of sedating medications or substances such as alcohol or illicit drugs; or is a smoker. The AAP also says the risks of sleeping on the same surface with someone else also increase 5-10 times when an infant is under four months of age; is sharing the surface with someone other than a parent; or is a pre-term or low-birthweight, regardless of other factors.The academy also called out the use of inclined chairs such as bouncers and rockers.

WILDWOOD, N.J. - Authorities say a swimmer from Philadelphia who went missing in the ocean off the coast of New Jersey was not found after an exhaustive search. The Wildwood Police Department said 19-year-old Alfred Williams was among a group of four swimmers who needed to be rescued from the water last Tuesday. Emergency crews responded to the beach near Andrews Avenue around 4 p.m. and observed two swimmers in distress at least 100 yards off the shore. The two swimmers were pulled from the water by members of the Wildwood Fire Department, according to authorities. A 3-year-old girl is in critical condition after being rescued from a pool in Camden County, and three people were pulled from the ocean off the coast of Wildwood.

NEW YORK - Michael Avenatti was sentenced Thursday to four years in prison for cheating client Stormy Daniels, the porn actor who catapulted him to fame, of hundreds of thousands of dollars in book proceeds.The California lawyer, currently incarcerated, learned his fate in Manhattan federal court, where Judge Jesse M. Furman said the sentence will mean that Avenatti will spend another 2 1/2 years in prison on top of the 2 1/2 years he is already serving after another fraud conviction.The judge said Avenatti's crime against Daniels was made "out of desperation" when his law firm was struggling.

PHILADELPHIA - Following two water rescues Tuesday in New Jersey, experts are urging caution around pools and bodies of water as the summer weather ramps up. Emergency crews in Camden County were called to a home on Branch Avenue where a 3-year-old girl had to be saved from a backyard pool. She was flown to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in critical condition. Elsewhere in New Jersey, the coast guard and local authorities pulled three people from the ocean off the coast of Wildwood and scoured the water for a man. Alana Mauger, a spokesperson for the Red Cross of Southeastern Pennsylvania, says that it's particularly important to take water safety measures around children."The reality is that it can happen so quickly," Mauger said.

Experts say the combination of cool water, abundant sunshine and enough nutrients triggered a massive phytoplankton bloom off the coast of the mid-Atlantic during May.A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration satellite captured the stunning image of the bloom off the U.S. East Coast.Ecologists say the bloom might have been provoked by persistent upwelling that made sea temperatures cooler than average.When the predominant wind direction is out of the west or even southwest, cooler water from deeper depths can mix with surface layers, thus cooling the overall sea temperature.Water temperatures in blue were colder than average.

PHILADELPHIA - Police are investigating a robbery at a North Philadelphia Popeyes that was caught on surveillance video. According to police, the robbery happened on May 6 at the Popeyes restaurant located at 314 W Lehigh Avenue. Authorities say a man pried open the restaurant's back door and took cash from both registers. Video released by police shows the suspect dismantling the cash registered before carrying them out of the store. Police say the suspect managed to take $200 before fleeing in an unknown direction. Anyone with information on the robbery is urged to contact police at 215-686-8477 or submit an anonymous tip. AdvertisementPolice are searching for a suspect in connection with a robbery at a Popeyes in North Philadelphia.
