June 1 is the earliest "realistic" date when schools in England could start re-opening, the headteachers' union has said. Geoff Barton, head of the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), warned that "planning would need to begin very soon" for that to happen.

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said on Sunday that the Government had not yet reached a decision on when to reopen schools.

Britain's schools were ordered to close more than a month ago, except for children of key workers and vulnerable children, as the coronavirus pandemic sent the country into lockdown.

There are many details to be worked out to ensure the safety of pupils, staff and their families at home once schools re-open.
