Coronavirus researchers study head lice drug as possible treatment for deadly bug

Researchers rapidly searching for a coronavirus cure are investigating existing medicine which may hold the key to beat the virus – and one of these is a head lice treatment drug.

They are looking into the anti-parasitic drug ivermectin which is typically used to treat head lice. Dr Nirav Shah, an infectious disease expert at Northshore University HealthSystem told New York Post: “Finding a safe, affordable, readily available therapy like ivermectin if it proves effective with rigorous evaluation has the potential to save countless lives.” It comes as Australian scientists studied ivermectin and found it killed the virus in a controlled lab setting.
