Coronavirus: Science chief warns 8,000 deaths would be a 'remarkable' result

The UK's Chief Scientific Advisor has said it would be 'remarkable' if only 8,000 people die from coronavirus infections. Speaking in a press conference this morning, Sir Patrick Vallance said it would be a big achievement if the Covid-19 deathtoll matched that of the average number of annual flu fatalities.

He emphasised that all deaths were 'tragedies' in their own right. "There are 8,000 or so deaths from flu in an average season," he said at a press conference today. “It can be more than that in a bad season. “And if we can contain this down to the sort of level where it looks comparable to that - which would be a remarkable achievement - then that would be an outcome which is really quite remarkable." LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. - Washington Commanders safety Deshazor Everett has been charged with involuntary manslaughter for the fatal car crash that took the life of his girlfriend Olivia Peters. According to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, Everett was charged after investigators determined he was driving over 90 mph just before the crash. Authorities say Everett, 29, turned himself into the Louduon County Adult Detention Center Tuesday afternoon. RELATED: Washington Football Team player discharged from hospital after car crash that killed Maryland womanBoth Everett and Peters were traveling north on Gum Spring Road near Ticonderoga Road in a 2010 Nissan GT-R the night of the crash in December 2021. Loudoun County Sherrif's Office said the vehicle the couple was in veered off the right side of the roadway, struck several trees, and rolled over.  Peters was taken to StoneSprings Hospital where she died from her injuries. Everett was taken to Reston Hospital Center and treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Everett posted a $10,000 secured bond and has been released from custody.
