Britain is still filling less than half its coronavirus testing capacity a week before the deadline to reach 100,000 a day. Downing Street has admitted there is a "great deal more to do" to fill the gap between capacity and the number of people actually getting tested for Covid-19.
The capacity for tests in England, Scotland and Wales is now 48,273 a day. Yet just 22,814 coronavirus tests were carried out on 13,522 people in the 24 hours up to 9am on Wednesday.
