A coronavirus vaccine has been successfully tested on monkeys, it has been claimed. Chinese researchers tested out the inactivated coronavirus vaccine on a group of rhesus macaques, three weeks after they were infected with the disease.

The team from Beijing-baes Sinovac Biotech is one of at least four Covid-19 vaccines which have entered clinical trials in China.

According to a report published on Wednesday, this is the first animal trial for a coronavirus vaccine. Previous potential cures have been tested on rats.

But, reporting in the Science journal, the researchers said rhesus macaques are genetically similar to humans, meaning there is more chance a vaccine will work on humans as well.
