Indian railways may have to convert as many as 20,000 coaches into isolation wards, the Railways Board has informed it's zonal units.
The national transporter on Monday said it is planning to initially modify 5,000 passenger coaches, in its attempt to support the country's healthcare system as the number of individuals diagnosed with coronavirus disease has crossed 1,000.
As many as 27 deaths have been recorded as of now in India. Each coach has the capacity to carry 8-10 patients, a senior railway ministry official said.
To put things into perspective, these 5,000 coaches will be able to accommodate atleast 40,000 patients. These patients will be accompanied with doctors and paramedics, the official said.
