An infection disease specialist has said that the HSE test and trace turnaround time in the community is not good enough, especially with the current low rate of community transmission.
Professor Paddy Mallon told the Oireachtas Covid-19 committee that the stress test on the system will come in August with holidays and more travel, and then the onset of seasonal flu.
From referral to a test, to the completion of contact tracing, it is 2.1 days in the community. Prof Mallon said he believes it is inevitable that Ireland will experience a resurgence of coronavirus cases as the country relaxes restrictions and permits more travel.
