The Central Statistics Office has said that excess mortality for the period March to September this year is estimated at between 876 and 1,192.
The calculation assumes that, in the absence of Covid-19 deaths, mortality would have followed a similar trajectory to previous years.
It said the figures on deaths above those likely to be experienced under normal circumstances are based on the analysis of thousands of death notices on the website RIP.ie.
The CSO said that the number of death notices observed for September stands at 2,353, which it said was broadly in line with previous years' mortality statistics.
