An investigation has been launched after an inmate died today at Risley Prison. Ronnie Gaunt, 38, had been jailed in September for 42 months after a drug-fuelled attack on his girlfriend in the Hilton Hotel on Deansgate.

The Ministry of Justice confirmed he died in prison today. His death is not linked to the coronavirus pandemic, they added. In a statement the MOJ said: “HMP Risley prisoner Ronnie Gaunt died in custody on 15 April 2020 and our condolences are with his family and friends. “As with all deaths in custody, there will be an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.” Gaunt was jailed after pleading guilty to causing grievous bodily harm.
